FAQs

Who is therapy for?

People come to therapy for a whole variety of reasons. There’s a misconception that therapy is only for people who have hit “rock bottom” or who find themselves in crisis. But therapy is more than that and is for everyone. And learning more effective ways of coping/communicating, when you’re not in a crisis, can take the pressure off and work to your advantage.

How do I know therapy is right for me?

If you’re struggling with something - anything - and finding it difficult to manage, then you might need support. I think often when people are hesitant to ask for help, it is because they’re putting pressure on themselves to figure it all out. They might think it’s a sign of weakness to get support or they feel shame. But maybe it’s the opposite. Maybe it’s a sign of courage and will. An acknowledgment that something needs to change.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is confidential. I abide by BACP’s ethical guidelines.

Will you give advice and/tell me what to do?

No. I will however, offer you a different perspective or at times challenge you on your thought process and how you’re going about things.

But more importantly, it is understandable that you would want someone to tell you what to do when you’re feeling stuck or hopeless. You want to get yourself out of a rut. You probably feel like those “better” choices are somehow out of your reach. But therapy isn’t about someone telling you what to do. It’s collaborative and it’s about empowering you, so you can make better choices for yourself.

How long will it take until I feel better?

This really depends on what you have come to therapy for.

However, I want to invite you to look at therapy as a journey. That doesn’t mean you don’t get results or reach your therapy goals. It just means that your progress in therapy will not be linear. At times, you can leave therapy feeling great, as if a weight has been lifted. You gain new insight and new possibilities emerge. But other times, therapy can feel challenging. And we will go through the tough parts together, so you can come out the other side, feeling renewed and energised.

Do you offer fortnightly or monthly sessions?

No. I work on a weekly basis.

What happens next?

You can book a free introductory session to get a feel for how I work and for me to see if I can offer you the support you need. We will also check if our availability matches and if you can commit to weekly therapy. We discuss any other questions and concerns you may have.

For our initial session, I will ask you some specific questions about your history and your current circumstances. This is so I can gather a more accurate direction for our work together. This session will last a maximum of 90 minutes. After which, all sessions last 50 minutes.
